fwiw my 2006 Galant has been totally reliable and gets decent highway
mileage.  I don't think it gets to 40 mpg though. I don't know about
recent Volkwagens -- haven't had one in a while. That one, a Rabbit,
got outrageous gas milege but had a few little problems like doors
that came open while driving :) Also, you don't ever want to have to
replace a fuel pump in one of those.
