foreign policy liberal? dude you made that up. the distinctions in foreign
policy are threefold:

1. muscularity
    - hawks want to project a strong us military as a deterrent to potential
adversaries
    - doves want to project a peaceful, conciliatory foreign policy that
does not threaten other nations

2. internationalism v. traditional nation-state politics
    - liberals (big government types) want to put their faith in
international institutions like the UN
    - conservatives distrust institutions like the UN where dictators who
murder their own people have a voice in decision-making

3. isolationism v. interventionism
    - isolationists (like you) don't want to be involved in foreign
adventures- too expensive, too damaging to the country
    - interventionists (like me on some occasions) believe that there is no
such thing as "over there" and "over here" any longer, and that we must take
a stand for the rights of all people to be free

For #1, I like a blended approach. We need a strong military, but we also
need to use soft power to pursue our aims.

For #2, I take the UN for what it is- a useful place to meet and discuss
international matters, but not a moral or ethical authority (see the UN
Commission on Human Rights)
