Why would the US government pay attention? The current Patent system favors big business, and is a way of stifling new entries and maintaining the status quo.
Only wealthy firms can afford to file patents, and only other wealthy firms can afford to mount a concerted challenge to them. Patents are now used for the same purpose as Digital Rights Management - to legitimise a form of business that borders on racketeering. Just keep buying, and ignore the men behind the curtain.
