"you're too smart to fall for that nonsense and yet you're a true believer."

Is the point of this statement is that the only choices are "all nonsense" or 
"all true"?  Nothing in between is allowed?

Or can we agree that some people on both sides of the issue use nonsensical 
tactics but that others do not and that an intelligent person can weigh the 
various statements, evidence and opinions and then make an informed decision?  
Or is this to reasonable to be allowed?
