you need a phone line for DSL. you don't need one for DirecTV. with the older receivers, you were supposed to have one. we did not, and got daily messages about "reminders to make a phone call". the newest HD DVR receiver does not require you to have a phone line (or nag you about it). the only thing you won't be able to do is order PPV via the remote. We don't normally order PPV, so not a big deal for us. But you can still order online or over the phone (the latter of which they will charge extra for). I'd also like to go on record as saying that, back in the late 90's, we had directv and did have problems with outages during severe rainstorms. For a brief period of time, we moved to cable (not because of said outages... we just... did). We went back to DTV a number of years ago, and have yet to have an outage due to weather (and we lived in FL for a while, where there were some pretty intense rainstorms). DTV just rolled out a kajillion (give or take) new HD channels also. but in the interest of full disclosure, i am biased because my need to have the Sunday Ticket means that I won't even look at other options. So yes, I do like DTV, but I can't tell you if they're better/worse than other providers. -- Charlie Griefer ================================================ "...All the world shall be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you.
