First off, use Occam's Razor. In other words what is the more simpler of mechanisms, a mechanism that violates most if not all laws of the universe - ie, a big guy with a white beard that waves his hands and poof - everything, or a mechanism that consists of simple gradual changes punctuated by rapid changes on the fringes of the population distributions?
