It's really not uncommon.  Skeptics are faced with this all the time.
Pretty much everybody has at least "Sacred Cow" - some belief that makes no
sense but is completely, vehemently defended.

There are SO MANY examples of Harvard Professors that believe in UFO
abduction, physicists that defend homeopathy and brain surgeons that visit
astrologers.

There's really not much to do... you just kind of have to know that
everybody's crazy in at least one way and prepare as best you can: it'll
come out sooner or later!
