Unfortunately, many times, there's not much market for "themselves".
Case in point, Kelly Clarkston.

Artists confuse themselves with their brand and think that people are
buying them, not their music, so when they get a chance to really be
themselves they're always surprised when it tanks.

It'd be like deciding that since you just delivered a successful
release, that your management is going to REALLY like the code you've
always wanted to write.

Some artists do get lucky in that they're successful (usually small)
doing what they want right off because they don't expect anything
huge; e.g., Jesca Hoop
