You should check out the latest research on chemosynthesis, which is being driven by
discoveries along and in the hydrothermal vent systems along the ocean floor and in
some of the geyser systems. Look for Archaea on a search engine for the latest info.
(for true geeks, try Chemoautotrophic Bacteria)

These scientists feel they are a lot closer to explaining the origins of "life" and
the mechanisms that may have made it possible.

Plus, tube worms are kool! (http://www.sciam.com/news/050701/IMG/tubeworm200.jpg)

Actually, Larry, what it does is fill the holes that evolutionary theory
hasn't filled - for example, I remember in biology class we made these
little protein blobs in water, I forget what they are called. But
apparently they were a theory of how the first cell formed - in the
primoridal soup of amino acids and proteins these little protein things that
looked liked cells, contained the material for cells but weren't alive were
somehow made to live. Scientists theorized that perhaps lightning
electrified the proteins making life - but we haven't been able to reproduce
this, so there is no real evidence to show that lightning electrified the
protein blobs and made them cells. Other scientists theorized that a
supreme being made the blobs cells. There is no real evidence to show this
but its a theory.
