Well, I ended up going with the Buffalo Mimo router which I got from my local
Circuit City, figured I could just return that if not happy with it. But it has
a built-in amplifier and was supposed to give significantly stronger signal.
Upon hooking it up and configuring it I did indeed notice a much better signal
throughout the house. I paired it with the PC card from Buffalo for my laptop
and it seems to be rock solid.

Now interestingly enough, I have been struggling to get the Slingplayer mobile
working on my Tilt phone. This lets me stream video from my TV to watch
anywhere. It works fairly well on the Tilt over 3G but not flawlessly so I
thought it'd be neat to run it over the Wifi at home (or anywhere else there's
a hotspot). But for some reason, it just wasn't able to connect properly. The
phone connected to Wifi fine, to use IE or email, etc. but Slingplayer was
locking up every time. After doing a whole slew of things to get it working,
finally gave up. Then yesterday, as I'm getting ready to go away on vacation, I
was having some issues with the router trying to do an SSH tunnel for Remote
Desktop. Also really wanted to get a dynamic DNS set up (my IP doesn't change
that often, but it does change if there's a power outage and the cable modem
reboots). I decided to flash the router with the DD-WRT firmware which had DDNS
control built-in and just a lot more options to configure the router. After
getting RD working again, I figured I'd try the Slingplayer again and see if it
made a difference. And surprise, the darn thing works fine now! Get a real nice
solid stream from my Tivo anywhere in the house. So I greatly appreciate that
suggestion, who would have guessed that just flashing a different firmware
would have fixed such an issue.
