I long ago figured out that I could best contribute to the country by
building stuff and creating value in the economy. I considered going
to work for the CIA after 9/11, but I don't know squat about actual
warfare, battle-zones, intelligence gathering, etc., and it still
seems like I can better contribute in the civilian world.

Occasionally I think about the government and the military effort in
terms that I understand- systems, software, etc., and I wonder if
there are ways I could contribute there. I'd love to help the
government build better collaborative systems for fighting the war.
Right now I am just getting my company off the ground. Maybe later
I'll be in a position to apply some resources toward solving problems
for the Pentagon. I'd like that.

As for the family, I will echo Bruce's thoughts. They are free to do
what they want. If my daughter were to choose military service, I
would be proud for her to serve. At the moment she either wants to be
an actress or a teacher, but she is only nine, so a decision isn't
exactly pressing. My wife is on par with Dana in terms of her feelings
about the war, and I don't expect her to contribute to something she
disagrees with.
