>From an armchair general's perspective you can use business practices on a war... the real thing is much messier.
That said, I'd like to submit the following modification on your view of the "Iraq 2" project, specifically by breaking it into several sub-projects. In addition, I am removing the requirement of Time Bound, mainly for the reason that I and others have said before: Any arbitrary timeline that is set will either fail to be met or be used by the enemy. In the business world there is also something called slippage, when a project fails to meet a specific deadline or milestone and is simply "pushed out" to a more attainable goal. I would also submit that anyone who sets a specific date or date range timeline is setting themselves up for failure when war does what war does. We already have measurable milestones in place, some have been met and others have not. Iraq 2.1 Specific: Yes - Removal of Hussein regime Measurable: Yes Attainable: Mission Completed Releasable: Yes, though I'll agree that Bush looks dorky in a flight suit Iraq 2.2 Specific: Yes - Rebuild Iraq while Iraqi Constitution & Government Formed Measurable: Yes Attainable: Mission Completed Releasable: Yes Iraq 2.3 Specific: Yes - Support & Provide Training for Iraqi Military/Police Measurable: Yes Attainable: Yes, Progressing Releasable: Yes, See 2.4 Iraq 2.4 Specific: Yes - Assist Iraqi Forces in Fighting Insurgents Measurable: Shaky but yes Attainable: Yes, but only with support of Iraqi government and forces Releasable: Yes, See 2.5 Iraq 2.5 Specific: Yes - Release of Protection/Control to Iraqi Government Measurable: Yes Attainable: Based on success of 2.3 and 2.4 Releasable: Yes So out of 5 sub-projects, 2 have already been completed, the other three are well on their way and we continue to see good news on those fronts. > Iraq 2 > ------------------ > * Specific? No. WMD? Democratic Iraq? Regime change? Terrorism? > Iran? Nation-building? Humanitarian? > * Measurable? No. You can't measure what you can't define. > * Attainable? No. You can't achieve and attain what you can't measure. > * Releasable? No. You can't exit when you can't define a goal or > measure progress. > * Time-bound? No. You can't time box what isn't defined or measurable. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Get involved in the latest ColdFusion discussions, product development sharing, and articles on the Adobe Labs wiki. http://labs/adobe.com/wiki/index.php/ColdFusion_8 Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:246857 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5
