Yes, I believe the Marine Corps recently changed its approach to
hand-to-hand combat by concentrating more on grappling for just this reason.
I saw a couple minutes of it about a month or so ago. Made sense looking at
it. Once a guy was caught, he was at the catcher's mercy, basically.

"From what I've heard, there's some sort of "mixed martial arts" that is
more
boxing with some other things thrown in to make use of the feet, but the
majority of the battle is done with fists. Is this correct? Is this the
stuff I see on commercials where they fight in a cage? I don't include
these guys in my argument, because it looks like they are mostly boxers
anyway, and they look like serious contenders. Educate me on this, will
you?"

Actually, from the mixed arts bouts I've watched on t.v., most of them are
won with grappling. A pure boxer had better get that knock-out punch in
before the grappler can step inside of his punch, grab his shoulders, throw
him over the grappler's hip to the ground, wrap up the boxers arms with his
legs and then pounding the head until the guy gives up.

If one has not been trained in 'ground' defense and escape, I would not want
to be at the mercy of a well trained grappler. The boxing and kicking is
usually used to get an opening to grapple. Of course a well timed knock-out
knee to the head of somebody rushing in to grab you is a pretty effective
defense.
