The classes at these schools are complete wastes of time (which is good practice for being able to cope with the average working day in many companies), but they have no real educational value.
To wit, at the most recent teacher-parent conference in Mike's school I was looking at a wall display of "exceptional" work from students in the IB (International Baccalaureate) program, of which Mike is a member. The word "environment" was spelled *five different ways!* I brought this up to a teacher who was very proud of the IB students, but who didn't even take a cursory look at the work posted as "exceptional" to notice that *these students can't even spell!* I would actually be happier if all they did in each class each day was have a successively harder series of menial tasks assigned to them, variously as individuals and as teams, and were graded on how they self-started, finished, got along with others both in the same team and other teams, etc. I can build a better child with that kind of schooling. In the process of doing these tasks they would be forced to deal with all different personality types and neuroses, and be forced to deal -- sometimes physically -- with conflicts, much like a prison exercise yard. As it stands in their public schools, they get the prison exercise yard effects without any of the educational benefits, so why not abandon math and English and just concentrate on "Getting Off Your Lazy Ass And Getting Things Done Promptly Without Pissing Other People Off 101?" Give me a kid who has schooled in self-discipline until age 14, but who has never been schooled formally in math or English or science or history (assuming he at least reads), and I'll have him ready to graduate high school ahead of his conventionally-educated counterparts, and with higher grades. And he'll be a better citizen and have a lot more fun getting there, too.
