Boy, I would love it if my family decided to make such a move. Christmas is a
total killer for me as my family seems to grow every year. We've tried in the
past the idea of only doing gifts for the kids, but we just never ended up
sticking to it. And that of course really sucks for me since I'm the only
single one in my family (with no kids). Not that I begrudge getting the kids
stuff, but it's not easy finding cheap gifts they won't just toss aside...and
it does kind of hurt a bit when I have only a gift or two from my parents to
open in return. But mostly when I see how much stuff these kids get from their
parents (and other extended family) it just seems ridiculous to spend more
money on them...particularly since half the time I expect my gift is totally
off the mark for what they like. I sponsor a couple poor children in other
countries and do try to send a nice donation for Christmas gifts each year but
when I think of the hundreds of dollars I spend on gifts for my own family,
boy, that money could do so much for so many other people in need.

You do have to be careful about how you approach this kind of idea though. A
few Christmases ago one of my brother's told me that for Christmas they had
decided instead of gifts, that they would donate in our names to their charity.
Not our favorite charity....*their* charity. I kind of joked about my brother
probably being one of the few people that could find a way to make his
Christmas gifts tax deductible! So that definitely didn't go over very well.
