This is the BEST desk I ever had ... and it's homemade. I looked everywhere for
a black desk, sturdy, somewhat modern/industrial looking, big enough for my
stuff and couldn't find anything affordable.

So I made it.

Get a solid core door from your local home improvement store (may need to be
ordered). You can find them for between $30-50. Mine is 36" x 72"; the door
itself was 80" but I cut it down and have a piece to make into a shelf whenever
I get around to it. I actually got two doors and made the right-hand return
from the second. With the price of the doors, you can really go crazy here and
build as many pieces as you want for not much money.

Paint it black (or whatever color). Put on a good coat of poly if you want it
to resist scratches. I didn't put on enough and the top has some
scratches/wear, but it adds to the patina. I guess you could also stain it if
you want; the doors I got had a nice grain.

Get some metal roof flashing. I'm not sure of the exact stuff I used (think it
was some kind of cap material), but its width is exactly the width of the edges
of the door. I screwed it on with metal screws and my hubby helped me bend/cut
it around the corners. If I ever make this desk again for some reason, I need
to find a better solution for bending the flashing around the corners because
it left some sharp edges, but I took care of that with some silicone. The
flashing really gives it a finished look and adds to the industrial feeling.

Order some desk legs from IKEA or get some metal piping material from Lowe's
and screw it on.

Drill holes for cords.

Voila! Instant desk. I put this together for less than $100.
