Actually no, they (the last Pope at least) has said it is a question for 
science, not religion. But I *do* think the Church has no real desire for it to 
be found authentic. Why? Because one of the basic tenets of faith is that it 
should need no proof. It's been my experience that many Christians do not care 
at all for the idea that it possible that Jesus left behind definitive proof of 
his suffering on the cross, because it flies in the face of what they have been 
taught...that belief in him should be only a question of faith, not of proof.
