Jim, you answered your own question. Ditch those failing drives and buy new
stuff. The money is nothing compared to the hassle of data recovery.

As far as RAID goes, I'll take Linux software RAID over mobo-based fake RAID
any day. I setup a file server last year on Linux and all the guys on the
tech list I used for advice told me to forget about hardware RAID and go
with Linux software RAID. Well, the mobo in that server ate itself last
week, and boy did I find out how right those guys were. I popped in a new
mobo, plugged in the drives in the same order on the new board, and the
system came back without a hiccup.
