Still fits in with the model really nicely actually. A rare response to what 
you described as "particularly egregious misstep" its. That sort of punishment 
serves to interupt the behavior and allow new responses to be learned. Now if 
your folks beat the crap out of you and left you bruised and bleeding, or many 
not have depending, that's something else.

Consistent reliable discipline - ie the consequences are the same over multiple 
occurances, is a very good preventative. 

The problem is that you're looking at one tiny incident, rather look at the 
entire period of your childhood then decide.
