That sort of punishment serves to interupt the behavior and allow new responses to be learned. Now if your folks beat the crap out of you and left you bruised and bleeding, or many not have depending, that's something else.
Consistent reliable discipline - ie the consequences are the same over multiple occurances, is a very good preventative.
