Like Billy said, it is not called a pyramid scheme any more. It is Multi
Level Marketing. I did this for a while with Herbalife. Basically, here
is how it works:

You sign up as a distributor of a product. You get a percentage of every
sale you make. If you are good, then you can do pretty well as I did.
Where the real money is though is getting others to become a distributor
under you. That way, for every sale they make, you get a percentage of
that on top of the ones that you have. If you can sign up a lot of
distributors, you can make a lot of money. But then the super real money
is where those distributors sign up new distributors under them and so
on. There are people who literally make millions a year doing this. I
worked for one such person. This guy got his start selling Herbalife and
ended up making millions, and started his own MLM company (I was not a
distributor under him though. Conflict of interest). I was one of the
developers on his team when I was in Texas.
Anyway, when I was doing this, I was shown DVD's of people who quit
their jobs because they were making five digit incomes a month. And the
marketing was very good. I signed up with a site that generated leads
that we could buy and another site that had pre-built templates so my
customers could order on-line. I had customers all over the US buying
product from me, but I could never get anyone to be a distributor so I
quit. Too much work with a full time day job, programming on the site
and college.
