I gave it a shot... I actually discovered that I had nothing, nothing at all installed for protection. When I upgraded my disks last summer I reinstalled Vista but never installed OneCare.
So, for nearly a year I've been riding Vista bareback. Commando! Without a condom! (Well... not completely footloose and fancy free. I use Outlook's built-in SPAM checker, Windows built-in firewall, I leave user account control enabled and there's always the simple firewall on my router.) And SpywareDoctor found... nothing. Oh - it looked like it did. It shouted "346 infections!"... which all turned out to be cookies (I really hate it when this protection software uses words like "infection" or "compromise" for cookies). But it found nothing else. I was also a little annoyed that it DIDN'T require a reboot to install, but claims that it does to UNINSTALL. What up with that? ;^) I'm not saying that I'm "safe" but I am saying that Vista's been good to me (credit where credit is due and all). I'm a heavy internet user (even, sometimes, partaking of the warez and pron) and really haven't had any worries.
