> Be sure to ask some locals about the hidden beaches

I would recommend this for anything. In general, the locals are great people. I
really miss that. Like anywhere else, there are a few rotten apples in the bunch, but
if you use good judgment and some common sense, you'll have a great time. I think
Adam hit on a great point. See the sites, do the touristy stuff, but then get out!!
Go see the island. I met a couple in Waikiki that have visited Oah'u two weeks a year
for the last 10 years and have NEVER gone beyond the Honolulu Waikiki area. I was
flabbergasted because there's so much to see and do. The beaches are fantastic, the
hiking is outstanding, and in September, the weather is awesome!! If you're into
hiking, look at getting the book "The Hiker's Guide to Oah'u" or Maui or whatever
island you're going to. I believe it's a
series and there's one for each island. Tells you whether it's Beginner, Intermediate,
or Novice. Waterfalls, mountain, valley. Great book and has great trail instructions
and maps. I would definitely recommend hiking because you get to see parts that most
tourists don't bother to take the time, and that's where the real beauty and spirit of
the islands are. Now I want to go back!!

I lived on Kauai for a year (kilauea), and just recently went back for a
vacation with my girlfriend and family. All of the islands are going to seem
similar to somebody whose never been there before, but I can say that Kauai
is truly a magical spot. A lot of movies have been filmed there because of
it's remoteness and breathtaking views. I don't have too many scenery shots
without family members in the picture, but if you'd like to see pictures
  from my trip: http://acantrell.homeftp.org/picview/index.cfm?gallery=hawaii

We stayed at the Hanalei Colony Resort (http://www.hcr.com/), I couldn't do
this place justice in an email. I personally liked it MUCH better than
Princeville, which is the highly touted resort-of-resorts on the island. HCR
is much more laid back, and it's right on the beach. If you stay there, you
will be giving up television, which I thought added even more to the
experience (although they do have a plugin for your laptop by the pool if
you really start to feel disconnected, I used it a few times).

Be sure to ask some locals about the hidden beaches, there are some awesome
  ones (read: nude).

  ps. congrats.
