I don't think this is a mistype or accident, i think it is evil users.

When applying for something that requires a human moderator to approve, the
moderator often checks the name and compares it to the email address. A
match gets almost automatic approval. A gmail address adds to the belief.

Therefore many users I know use a generic address that matches their name,
but is not theirs, to get through the temporary gateway (content site
registration, etc).

(Did I mention users are evil)?
