No, it's true alright. I know a few of them myself. And the French Foreign Legion has many decades of experience with such men, and they do the do at the drop of a hat.
Through an acquaintance I met a guy back in the day who loved killing more than just about anything. After he left the Army he became a mercenary in Africa. Never got his fill. Always edgey. But damned sure put it where it needed to go, and when. What do people expect? There are no heros; there never were. Just a bunch of deeply flawed individuals who play the hand they've been dealt as best they can. You want people to intelligently and efficiently kill on command? Start with raw material that is willing and able to do it without hesitation, without philosophizing for three hours among a panel of whiners. And train them, hard. Desensitize them enough to keep going when it gets thick. And then look the other way a bit when things don't operate at 100% perfection, because it rarely will. You're wondering where "Just following orders" comes from? The Germans didn't invent it, and they aren't the last ones to use it.
