Ahh yes, good times. Did the same when I lived in South Dakota, but was 
a hail storm. And they don't have a helmet law, so I was really hurting.

And I see what you are saying. But whether you trade in a vehicle, or 
buy a second more economical one, it is still going to take a while to 
recoup what you spent on the new one. Probably the only way you could 
come out ahead sooner was if you were in a situation like me. I pay 
$605.00 a month for my truck (payment and insurance, short term loan). 
If I traded it in now for an economy car where the payment is 1/2 or 
even 1/4 of what I am paying now, then the savings I realize on the 
payments as well as the savings in gas will speed the process of 
recouping my money, I guess. I am not an economist so I might be wrong.
