To jack the thread, what about this: Disregarding all the questions, like "what is consciousness", etc..
Say we do create digital "life". For the sake of argument, lets say we control all aspects of it (I doubt this is possible, but anyways). Are we God? Jim? The mysterious may be the only reason our digital overlords keep us around. :-P (seriously, I think Kurz. is right, we'll "meld" with 'em 'fore they achieve their own deal). Eh.
