Three reasons:

1. Sports is not news, it's entertainment, so it doesn't count.
2. U.S. sports leagues, at least baseball and football, are fairly
conservative in terms of promoting traditional American values- patriotism,
family values, and yes, Christian values such as forgiveness.
3. The born-again reformed drug addict success story is a great TV
archetype- it sells.

As for the trading one addiction for another, I suggest you check out
"Breaking the Spell, Religion as a Natural Phenomenon", by Daniel Dennett.
