If there is pricing collusion among the big retail gasoline sales
companies, that can be remedied, but supply and demand (along with
speculation about future supply and demand) is what has driven oil
over $100/barrel.

I have the same problem. CA freeways are just not safe for a scooter.
I'd love to see electric cars, but we're still a long way from having
a good enough battery to enable normal and reliable travel.

I disagree. The smartest companies are putting R & D money into all
kinds of other technologies. Keep in mind, though, most huge companies
are decidedly bad at real innovation. They are good, though, at
recognizing innovative companies and acquiring them. I think it is
highly likely that the big oil companies will start acquiring
alternative fuel producers. Their expertise isn't just in oil and gas
exploration, production, and refining, they are also experts at
logistics and retail sales. If the fuel being supplied changes, who
cares? It's still basically the same business at the retail level.
