They have been adding countries over the last couple of years.
Australia was only in mid 2006.
   South Africa was Winter 2006.
Russia, Turkey, Taiwan, Thailand, Croatia, Solvenia, Lithuania, Estonia
were mid 2007
   Phillipines was fall 2007

And to answer your next question (below) about who google sources, it
depends on the location, and the service agreements google can strike.

For the most part, they try to use NavTeq, but also use TeleAtlas, Europa,
and a dozen others.

But, depending on agreements, there are some places and pieces that NavTeq
won't let them do. Notice the maps generated by the googlemaps API. They say
"teleatlas" instead of "navteq", even for most US citites. That is because
Navteq mostly sells its road data to incar GPS navigation system producers,
and didnt want google to steal from that business, and forbid google to use
their data from the API (though they can use it from the web app)

There is apparently an existing mapping site that has the lions share of the
Israeli map mindshare (the need for google to be there first if gone, and
the ability for it to "beat" that existing site with features or
functionality is limited), and it sounds like google has been trying to play
hardball with navteq on adding new countries. So Isreal might be getting
skipped by politics, but not the kind we would normally expect (no business
case for it to be NEXT)
