I took a Philosophy of God elective my senior year in college, and this book
was a central text. We read it, then dissected it from cover to cover....so
yeah, I know all about what you are talking about.

And you are right, the book is titled "WHEN bad things happen...", not
"Why..." (though that question is pondered as well), and it's mostly about
dealing with it. Our class focused on reconciling this question with the
concept of a "God" as well...which made for an interesting study.

I've made no bones about my disdain for religious zealots...but I have a lot
of respect for the Jesuits (this class was taught by a Jesuit priest). They
really value the educational aspect of everything, including their faith,
even valuing education that would seem to contradict that faith.
