I'm not sure I disagree with you, but I definitely don't agree that this is somehow specific to or worse for this generation. ;^) There's been hoaxers and publicity hounds since there's been money and glory to make from hoaxing. Piltdown man, the Cardiff Giant, Spiritual mediums, Barnum's Fiji Mermaid, the Patterson footage of BigFoot, Crop Circles... all (and many, many more) done by older generations.
