Get this straight. McCain is the one dissing his service by using it as red herring to avoid answering valid questions. The first time he said it, perhaps it had meaning. Repeating it endlessly for political gain makes it a throwaway line and to me a bunch of blah, blah, blah. And there is nothing partisan about it. I had intended to support McCain until he snuggled up with Jerry Falwell and the rest of the religious right. I'll call out Obama just as quickly if he uses misdirection and spin. I have, in fact, criticized him often for the "poor little black boy down in the ghetto" nonsense. I don't recall ever defending Kerry for anything. Kerry threw away his medals, so they obviously didn't mean much to him. Doing that, then suddenly wanting to be a war hero president struck me a hypocritical in the extreme.
