I see this more as misdirection and spin than as a solicitation of
pity.  Bring up any topic for discussion, and it gets hijacked to a
discussion of his time as a POW.  And of course, questioning a POW
makes you seem cruel or unpatriotic.

This is the same tactic used for years by repugs who derailed any
conversation about Bush's mistakes by bringing up the Clinton sex
scandal.

Classic disinformation technique.
