true and true.  But here's the controversial part ... I have some
friends that are cops, some marines, et al.  If you ask them casually
why they're doing it they'll usually say, "to server the [something]".

Get a few beers in 'em however and they always say, "aw I just joined
up to shoot guns" or something like that.  In fact the brother of a
friend is one of these power-nuts.  He's been in volunteer cop stuff
since he was 5 and now he's 20 and waiting for his badge.  He's WAY
WAY into the power trip thing.  Scary, really.

Anyway, bottom line is, I've probably only met 1 person (sample is
probably 100) that I truly believe does what they do majority "to
serve".  That is, even if they get a good feeling out of it, it's
their primary reason.

The rest of the people do it for other reasons: adventure, power,
pride, recognition, etc.

It's like giving money at Christmas; they always say the real test is
if you're still willing to give anonymously.

It's why you have to admire a guy like Warren Buffett - gives the
majority of his money away and only revealed that for tax reasons.
