Folks,

I would like to recommend we all do something for ourselves and one another
during this time of political consideration. I would like for us all within
the next five days to watch the film "1984" starring John Hurt and Richard
Burton. It was filmed at the exact time (April 1984) and in the exact place
in England described in the original novel.

While you're watching the film, make connections between principles in the
film and what is currently happening in our own country today. It won't be
hard at all (Goldstein is an obvious one). Then ask yourself, is this
because of one political party or the other, or both? Or can we only blame
ourselves? And come up with your own questions and answers to discuss.

I have seen so many fruitless discussions -- forgive me, but it's how I
honestly feel -- about some attribute of this personality or that
personality or which party is better for my purposes or your purposes, etc.
I just think it's time that we as a relatively involved and intelligent
group focus on the bigger picture of what lies beneath, and 1984 is a great
conversation starter.

When I was a young man just out of military school, an art gallery owner
asked me "What is art?" To which I gave the typically wrong answer "Art is
beauty." "No," he said, "art *moves* you." 1984 is truly a work of art.

Let's all discuss in a few days, shall we?

Respectfully,
