I did not realize that Street view had made it to Galveston! What a trip, sent me right back to that September. The city is full of grackles then and at sunset they are all singing :
from that description, I think you are looking at the southwest end of the island. I am not real familiar with that, except that yes, it is newer and the houses tend to be on stilts. I am talking about the east end, say 12th and Church for one of the nicer neighborhoods. The more dilapidated area are southwest of there and on the other side of Broadway, but i am not putting a finger on one just now.
