You're right, the disconnect between reality and what people around
the world believe is breathtaking. Why is it that Gitmo is regarded
as something akin to a concentration camp? Someone please explain what
actual events at Gitmo would have given it the reputation it has.

Here's my take. Gitmo is a bogey man of the Left - part of the
justification for its "Hate America" stance. People around the world
see what has been, in effect, a six year propaganda campaign by the
Left against America (the US government, which is what people really
mean in this context when they talk about America), and they wonder if
all the bad things they hear are true.

Perception is reality, right? So why does the Left (and I'm not
talking about you, Maureen) continue to drive the perception that
Gitmo is a den of horrors? The answer goes back to why we are debating
this election - it is a partisan political maneuver designed to put
America in as bad a light as possible overseas, to put pressure on the
President to change policy. Well, they have changed the policy, but
they have managed to put America in as bad a light as possible.
