Unlike you, he probably knows that we did that a long time ago and knows that our advancement in the area has seriously stalled. We have stagnated or fallen in measures of math and science at the K-12 levels. Our top tier higher education institutions are still doing well, though don't have the lead they used to. We were first on the moon, its true. But the space shuttle program is being extended beyond its planned end-of-life period (we sure hope nothing bad happens because of that) and our "next generation" reusable launch vehicle is nowhere near done. The shuttles are now set to be phased out in 2010 and we have nothing to replace it. The ISS will be serviced by Russian vehicles in the meantime and they aren't aging well. We run the risk of having to shelve the entire ISS program because of lack of vehicles to service the mission.
And that doesn't even begin to touch on Bush's State of the Union plan to send a manned expedition to Mars. China is pushing ahead hard. They are advancing. We are retreating. Yeah, we did a space walk 40 years ago. But we are on the verge of not being able to do one now. Wouldn't you think that a country with a 40 year head start would be doing better now? I'm hoping that your snarkiness is just ignorance and not partisan filth. If you think our kids are keeping up with the rest of the world in math and science then you've got some severe problems.
