Here's what I've heard about that:

(1.) The suggestion that Ayers "launched" Obama's career, or that they
are anything other than distant acquaintances, is false and was
planted by Texas billionaire Harold Simmons, a major backer McCain and
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth four years ago, who is the sole donor to
an advertisement attacking Obama.

(2.) In April, Obama said that he "deplored" Ayers' actions in the
1960s and that "by the time I met him, he is a professor of education
at the University of Illinois."

(3.) The campaign position (today) is that they're not going to
denounce someone they have no relationship with.  For example, if
somebody said McCain was under North Vietnamese mind control should
McCain denounce the North Vietnamese?
