Reasons why EU might have more problems: Politics. What may be best for France might not be good for Germany. There will be a lot of fighting. EU I-banks are more highly leveraged than their US counterparts.
Reason why EU might have less problems: This is the part that I could be wrong but I used to get publication for Assets under Mgt and the EU banks always had a lot of money than I would have predicted. I assumed it was because their business model was a little different than ours. Banks like UBS and DB have huge private banking divisions. Their larger cash supplies might help them get through this. Yet they so many countries share the same currency. When the EU is moving in one direction it is a formidable entity indeed. When it is flailing in multiple directions, it is a confusing beast. There is a lot I don't understand about EU politics/economics. The intricacies of when the EU works as an entity and when it works as individual countries is fascinating and seemingly arcane. This time period will be an amazing field of study for future dissertations in economics, political science and foreign affairs.
