I think this was the definition of cognitive dissonance.

I feel as if our country - for some reason I can't glean - has slipped
away from 2 core things:

(1.) A recognition, respect, and appreciation for individual critical
analysis. The entire Bush/Palin thing is a rejection of
intellectualism. Of intelligence. i.e., intelligence is bad and not
to be trusted; "plain-spoken" is much better.

(2.) If you believe in the platform, then anyone else who supports the
platform must be a good person and make good decisions.

Powell's lesson is a great lesson for everyone: vote the person, not
the platform, and not the ideology.

And to wander on to this election ...

Both of these candidates have revealed themselves in their campaigns:

Obama has revealed himself to be the ultimate cool-hand luke, a world
class communicator, and a deliberative but stern leader.

McCain has revealed himself to be temperamental, erratic,
self-centered ("my feelings were hurt" seriously?), and an
unpredictable from-the-gut leader.

If we learn from Powell's lesson we forget the platform and vote the
person - Obama. Powell has, and he's therefore he's clearly learned
from his mistake.
