Sure, someone somewhere is going to probably have a beef with you no
matter what.

That doesn't mean that it is all equal though.

The CEO at my first startup was from Mali. And he had a real confusion
problem with a number of things in the US, like cops slowing down and
following him on the street as he walked. I would try and explain it
to him, "Dude, Cheick, you're black." and he wouldn't really get it at
first. Because where he comes from, black is normal. I'd have to
explain to him that random people on the street didn't get the
difference between African and African-American.

He didn't have it terribly bad. He wasn't told he couldn't head our
company because he was dark skinned. He wasn't told that he couldn't
go to certain bars with us after work or anything. But without a
doubt, he had to deal with shit that I generally did not because he
had really dark skin and I did not.

I had shit of my own to deal with and always have. I honestly do think
that class is more important in America than race in a lot of ways.
But it is also true that race has a disproportionate effect on what
class you end up in, so it is reinforcing.

Race is not the be-all and end-all of problems in the US, but it is
stupid to try and pretend that the playing field is level at this
point.
