Thanks Jim. I guess I can buy a XBOX 360 without fear that a newer design will come out soon. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Davis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "cf-community" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 4, 2008 5:48:43 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: RE: xbox 360

Yup. Actually not a "new" CPU but the same CPU (and graphics chip for that matter) built on a smaller process. This means less power and (more importantly) less heat. > B) When is this happening? Not sure... I thought it already started. > C) Is this a good thing? Probably... at least overall, "yes". Anything that performs the same function with less power can't be bad. ;^) Practically it won't make much of a difference - it really is the same CPU. Although the RRoD was primarily caused by heat it's root cause was effective handling of the heat: poor construction, thermal transfer and ventilation. Any processor can overheat if the cooling isn't up to the task. In the case of the launch units the processor wasn't "broken", the rest of the system was. I've also not heard anything about the XBox's OTHER nasty: that damn power brick. I was hoping that the new processors would be coupled with an announcement of an internal power supply, but I haven't heard anything. In any case the only way to tell if your box is a "new" one is to parse the serial number - the new processors won't have a change in packaging or price.
