I think you have hit on one of the things that has made the United States of America possible. and so successful.
Currently, we have it all. The ability to produce our food. the energy to power it. the raw materials to produce it. the people to make it. the mechanisms to transport it. the markets to consume it. and the rules and laws to allow it all to happen smoothly. we are self sufficient. and we are stronger with all 50 than we would be with 49. but we really dont need a 51st. we have what we need, now. How awesome is that?
