No, Tim, I don't think they do, judging from their posts. Folks, IIRC, there has been exactly one -- *ONE* -- violent crime committed to date with a legally-obtained and lawfully-owned Class III weapon. It was a crime of passion where a man used his M-16 to murder the man his wife was screwing behind his back. Statistically, that's well within the margin of error for perfection. American citizens own a massive amount of special weaponry -- all completely legally. We have been doing so since WWI, and between then and WWII you could buy a Thompson submachine gun with a 100-rd. magazine at your local hardware store. And if you didn't want to wake your neighbors when you shot a varmint on your land, you could also pick up a Maxim sound suppressor (what laypeople might refer to as a "silencer") for just a few bucks. It was only after Kennedy and King were assassinated that we started to make all that paperwork and added two new tax stamps to document and waiver prohibition of machine guns, etc. None of these -- save the one I mentioned -- has been used to commit a violent gun crime. Also please remember that there are currently more than 400,000 US citizens on the run from the law in the US alone. These aren't boogiemen; these are the people who live next door to you, either under new identities or, if they committed their crimes in another state, their regular identities (they don't have the money to come looking for you, and they don't want to spend precious state budgetary dollars keeping you locked up if they do find you). If I told you that the woman driving your childrens' school bus was wanted in another state for jumping bail on the charge of running a meth lab, and that this might be completely missed on a background check because of budgetary cutbacks preventing paperwork from being filed properly, you might not believe me, but it's very true. Even if John Law isn't actively hunting a man on the run, he feels hunted and will act accordingly. Ever corner a hunted animal?
