I think that there has already been some substantative change in terms
of style and substance. Rules on lobbying during the transition for
one. Public comment period for all non-emergency legislation for
another. That's the sort of change I really like to see.

As for appointments, I suspect that Obama will have a mix of "new"
progressives, some people with more establishment experience and some
people who are rather conservative for my taste. And that mix is, in
fact, change even when it includes people with existing establishment
ties. Obama isn't stupid or reckless. An entire cabinet of political
neophytes would be stupid and reckless.

If everyone who was crying "socialist!" would have paid attention,
Obama was being characterized by progressives as thoughtful, measured
and largely centrist. Obama's kind of change is articulating goals and
ideals and then working towards them.

That being said, I'm not particularly pleased about the idea of
Secretary of State Clinton. But I'm not likely to agree with any
number of Obama's picks and positions. On the whole, I'm hoping he's a
major improvement over the last 8 years and lays a solid foundation
for reasonable, practical, humane governance.
