There's ego...then there's egomania. Most front men probably have a big ego...but they haven't destroyed their bands because of it.
In some cases, the ego is deserved, and the band continues in spite of the mania...i'm thinking about Eddie Van Halen here. Apparently nobody can stand to be around the prick for very long....but he's so goddamn good, it doesn't really matter who he's with....and the band survives.
