I would expect that most people that put up, for lack of a better term, "soft opposition" have never thought about it as two separate issues. When you do the dichotomy becomes clear. What's also become clear to me is that you can actually oppose gay marriage (should you want to) while supporting the right for any two individuals to marry. I think if more people realized this there would be less actual opposition. I know it took me a while to understand the real issue and I consider myself fairly intelligent.
