I upgraded my Dell laptop from Vista to XP last year and it's been AWESOME! The only thing I would warn you about is that if you go into the Dell Support site and put in your Service Tag, it's going to show you XP drivers. You have to change the dropdown selectors to say XP before downloading the drivers *every time* you go back to the page. Some of the Vista drivers will even install on XP, but you'll get some really weird behavior, and if you are like me and didn't realize what you did, then you may get a little frustrated before realizing what you've done. It's very easy to download the Vista drivers by accident and I never found a way to permanently set my Service Tag to XP.
