The slingbox has 4 connections

source in
source out (to tv)
ethernet
remote ir cable

So, here in Boston, MA, I have it hooked up.

the output from my cable box to my slingbox
the output from my slingbox to my tv
the ethernet cable to my router
the remote IR cable is stuck to the cable box (allowing control of the cable
box remotely.)

Then, from the airport in Tampa, FL (or anywhere), I can run the slingbox
program on my laptop (over my cell card or wifi), and watch the video on my
cable system back home. There is a little remote control on my screen that
lets me change channels, control my dvr, and order on demand content.

Or my coworker uses it from Minneapolis to watch Red Sox games not broadcast
locally.

Or my father uses it from Florida to watch Celtics games not broadcast
locally.

I can also watch it on my Treo cell phone using the slingbox software (I had
to buy that extra).

At my trailer down in Connecticut, I dont want to watch on my PC, but on my
big ole LCD TV.
For that, I have a slingcatcher, allowing me to watch my cable box from
Boston on my TV in CT. The slingcatcher servers as the PC that runs the
slingbox client software, and hooks it to my TV.

Only 1 client can hook up at a time.
The client and the output (local TV) see the same channel.

It is scary when someone logs into my slingbox, and suddenly my tv starts
changing channels while I am alone in my apartment. I now have the slingbox
hooked to a cable box not attached to any TV.
